Our new, near 360° SkyCam, housed at the Unversity of St Andrews, went live today. This unique camera provides full-dome images of the sky over St Andrews, both day and night.

skycam thumbThis marks the end of an extensive project to construct the camera and develop the software behind it.

As the camera is sensitive in the Near Infrared (NIR) spectrum, it is possible to ascertain cloud cover, even at night.

Shortly after dusk, the camera will automatically switch to "night mode", where high gain is applied to the image sensor, to increase the definition of night time cloud cover. Shortly before dusk, the camera will return to "day mode".

The images may be slightly under / over exposed, during the transition period between modes.

You can view the output from the camera on our live WeatherCam page, along with today's image history.

We hope you enjoy this new addition to FifeWeather.co.uk.
